As Plainfield continues to grow—particularly on its west side—residents and travelers along U.S. 40 have likely noticed the rapid development near the Saratoga area. The addition of new housing developments, including the Del Webb community, has transformed this part of town into a vibrant residential hub. With this growth comes the need for improved infrastructure—especially pedestrian-friendly accommodations.

One recent highlight of this growth is the newly opened Cabin Coffee, a local favorite now situated conveniently at the U.S. 40 and Vandalia Boulevard intersection. This area, once quieter, is quickly becoming a central gathering point for residents, combining trails, coffee, and community activity.

Banning Engineering is proud to have played a key role in shaping this transformation. After designing the original intersection in 2015, our team was brought back to help address new challenges brought on by increased traffic and foot activity.

In 2022, the Town of Plainfield initiated a collaborative effort with the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) to improve pedestrian safety along U.S. 40—a state road requiring state-level coordination. Recognizing the growing need, INDOT promptly reduced the speed limit in this corridor to 45 mph. Still, more comprehensive solutions were needed.

To address this, Banning Engineering was tasked with designing a safe and efficient pedestrian crossing to connect the Forest Creek and Vandalia neighborhoods. Our design incorporates offset left turn lanes, which improve drivers’ line of sight and create a median refuge island—offering pedestrians a safer, staggered path to cross the busy road. This design also aligns with ADA standards, ensuring accessibility for all users.

“Offset left turn lanes improve visibility for drivers and provide a safe stopping point for pedestrians,” explains Banning Engineer Mark Butler. “It’s a practical solution that serves both vehicles and foot traffic effectively.”

In addition to the new crossing, Banning is also supporting upgrades to the intersection’s traffic signal system to enhance traffic flow and overall efficiency.

Our team is honored to support the Town of Plainfield in fostering a more walkable, connected, and safe community. As Plainfield continues to grow, Banning Engineering remains committed to designing infrastructure that meets the needs of today while preparing for the demands of tomorrow.
