Over 100 community members and leaders gathered in Borden on July 16th for the Monon South Groundbreaking Ceremony. The event commemorated the Monon South Trail, and attendees celebrated the future connectivity, economic development, and quality-of-life benefits of this regional trail system. Those in attendance look forward to the next several months as the trail becomes a reality and construction commences with Phase 1’s expected completion in Spring 2025.
The Monon South is an almost 60-mile trail between Mitchell and the Clark/Floyd County Border. The trail will connect eight Lawrence, Orange, Washington, and Clark County communities. Several local and state recreational properties sit close to the rail line. Many of them are places Jeff Banning enjoys Wandering, including Hoosier National Forest, Spring Mill State Park, Cave River Valley Natural Area, Twin Creek Valley Nature Conservancy, Jackson-Washington State Forest, and Clark State Forest. The Monon South Trail website notes that future regional planning includes linking this corridor to the New Albany Freedom Trail, which could extend the corridor to New Albany and the Ohio River.
In 2023, the Banning Engineering team surveyed the corridor and has now designed the Campbellsburg to Saltillo portion of the trail. After project completion, our team will have also conducted some GIS data management services. It’s an honor teaming together with this dynamic group of surveyors, engineers, designers, environmental specialists, community leaders, and community members.
