IUPUI Mapping

Banning and IUPUI receiving the 2018 Special Achievement in GIS Award

IUPUI hired Banning Engineering for GIS services that would map their campus’ stormwater and sanitary sewer infrastructure over a four-year period.  In the past, university personnel were confined to outdated maps and historical knowledge for preventive and emergency maintenance.  Not only was the data unreliable at times, but ownership of the pipes was often uncertain as Citizens Energy owns a large portion of the system on the IUPUI campus.  This four-year project is intended to remove these encumbrances and allow for IUPUI to much more easily maintain their system.  The scope of work includes the location of all of the structures with mapping grade horizontal accuracy and survey grade vertical accuracy.  Inverts within the structures were collected with survey grade vertical accuracy.  Structure data collected includes structure type, cover type, structure condition, and flow information.  Pipe data includes structure connections, invert ID’s, size, material, and slopes.  Due to the uncertainty of the system, many of the pipes have had camera inspections.  These inspections are attached to the pipes as PDFs so that the information is easily found.  The inspection videos are hosted separately by IUPUI.
